Key factors that impact the price of your custom closet

How much does a custom closet cost? It’s easily our most frequently asked question, and the answer is: It depends — mainly on the size of the space and what we’re putting into it. When considering a custom closet, the easiest way to think about cost is a simple phrase, “more product = more cost.” However, the average cost of a custom closet can range from $2,500 to $10,000. Custom closet prices for most customers sit around $3,500 to $5,000 based on your closet size and customizations.

How much does it cost to build a custom closet?

Before we fully unpack the topic of custom closet costs, let’s first cover a few more basic truths. All closets from Inspired Closets are custom manufactured to your exact specifications and are designed and built to your unique needs and wants. The board we use is commercial-grade and will not chip, warp, or bow. In fact, we warranty it for as long as you own your home. You can think of it as a long-term, furniture-grade solution, which is why custom closet prices from Inspired Closets will be more than a mass-produced closet system purchased at a retail store and may cost more than other custom closet brands.

We also do not overdesign. What do we mean by that? As design professionals, we’re called in to help solve a problem and relieve a pain point. Where there is pain, there is vulnerability, which means a client in the hands of an opportunistic designer can end up with a closet that is truly more than they need or want to spend. Our designers know their role — to help you solve the challenge of disorganization and inadequate storage – and we stay laser-focused on the problem. This clarity results in a custom closet that meets your wants and needs while delivering custom closet costs that respect your budget.

How do costs vary between the different types of closets?

As the phrase “more product = more cost” would suggest, the larger your closet, the higher the custom closet cost will be. For example, a 12’x15’ boutique or room-size closet, which has room for an island with a solid surface top will cost more than a 6’x8’ walk-in closet that does not. A walk-in closet with enough room for a double bank of drawers, for example, will cost more than a 6’x3’ reach-in closet that has room for only a single bank of drawers. As you can see by browsing our Idea Gallery, custom closets prices range from $1,000 to $10,000+, and much of that is cost is determined by decisions made in the design process.

Custom Closet Installation Costs

In addition to the physical size, the method of installation influences custom closet costs. Custom closets can either be wall-hung, floor-mounted, or a combination of both. One is not better or worse than the other; in fact, we design and install beautiful and functional custom closets using all three installation methods.

A wall-hung custom closet is just as described. The closet system is attached to the closet’s walls and suspended off of the floor. Because a wall-hung custom closet uses less product, it generally has lower custom closet prices. Alternatively, a floor-mounted custom closet is one where the closet structure extends to the floor. A floor-mounted closet, especially one with base molding, will give you a built-in look, which is why some clients prefer the look of floor mounting. For those who love the look of floor mounting but want a custom closet cost closer to wall-hung, we suggest considering a hybrid custom closet where a portion of the closet is wall-hung and select sections are floor-mounted.

Most Common Design Features Affecting Custom Closet Prices

Beyond the physical size and installation method, the design choices you make influence the cost to build a walk-in, boutique, or reach-in closet. During the custom closet design process, you and your dedicated designer will talk through and evaluate your need for various design features, the most common of which are listed below:

Color ASID Award-Winning Product

The color of your custom closet is one of the first choices you will make. Maybe you’re trying to match the colors in your home, or maybe you’re looking for a bold departure. Either way, we offer a variety of on-trend colors, from solids to our True Finish colors inspired by the elegance of real wood grain.

DRAWERS & DOORS ASID Award-Winning Product

The number of drawers you design in your space will influence how much a custom closet costs. If you’re trying to eliminate the need for a dresser in your primary bedroom, you’ll want to design more drawers for your custom closet, which will affect your custom closet price. The profile of the drawer front will also affect cost. Likewise, the number and the profile of the doors you choose affect cost. You may prefer a more open design that doesn’t include doors, which would lower the cost of your closet.
