Quick Closet Cleanout Hacks
Here’s a brief list of easy, low-lift tips to get you started on a closet refresh as quickly and painlessly as possible, whenever your schedule allows.
1. Do a Surface Sweep
Instantly refresh your closet space by taking a few minutes to remove visible clutter and anything that doesn’t belong on the floor and shelves, like documents from work, your child’s art project from last year, or those old shoe boxes you think you might eventually need but never do. This quick reset gives you an instant visual win.
2. Try the 3-Item Toss Rule
Set aside 15 minutes and pick three items to donate, relocate, or get rid of. This is a simple, time-limited habit that won’t overwhelm you or take up your entire day. Just be careful not to “relocate” too many items to another room in your home, so you don’t move the mess from one place to another.
3. Reorder by Category
Another way to instantly make your closet look and function better is to reorder your clothes on the closet rod by category. Group together tops, bottoms, dresses, and so forth so it’s easier to navigate what you have and see duplicates you may not need.
For example, you might find you have two denim jackets. Determine whether to keep or donate the second by asking yourself:
- Does it fit?
- Do you wear it?
- Do you love it?
- Do you need it?
This step could take 15 minutes or longer, depending on how far you want to go.
4. Test the Flip Hanger Trick
The flip hanger trick is a more passive approach to decluttering, but a tried-and-true way to get rid of the excess in your wardrobe. Start by hanging each item backward on the closet rod with the tip of the hanger facing you. As you wear your clothes, return each piece to the rod after laundering with the hanger facing the closet wall.
After a few weeks, anything left backward is unlikely to be worn and may be better off donated or given to someone else.
5. Use Bins or Baskets
If you don’t often have time to sort and organize your clothes and accessories, you can still practice organization without cleaning by making use of bins and baskets. Label a bin for everything in your closet so your things still have a dedicated home when your time is limited. For example, you could toss your shoes in a catch-all basket, accessories in another, and add a labeled overflow bin for the rest.
This solution is a temporary fix, but it keeps your closet cleaner and more functional until you’re ready for a deeper sort.
