Frequently Asked Questions
Wondering what goes into a custom closet? You’re not alone. Below, we answer our most frequently asked questions, from how the design process works to tips on maintaining your closet long-term.
Getting Started
A custom closet is a storage solution that’s designed specifically for your space, your belongings, and your habits—not a one size fits all rod and shelf. Because many closets are built with minimal thought (just a rod + top shelf), they often lead to under‐used space, clutter, or inefficient organization. A custom closet helps you use every inch in a way that supports your storage needs and daily routine. Read more about what a custom closet is and why to get one here.
During a consultation, a designer will ask how you currently use (and don’t use) your closet, what’s working, and what isn’t. They’ll measure the space, bring samples of materials and hardware, and show preliminary design options via 3D rendering or by using Envision, our priority augmented reality software that lets you walk through your space. Yes. At Inspired Closets we use a 3D design software to show you renderings of your space. In addition to a 3D design, you can walk through your new closet in its fully transformed state before it’s ever built by using Envision by Inspired Closets. This first-of-its-kind technology utilizes augmented reality so you can see every shelf, drawer, and design decision before you commit to buy.
Cost & Installation
It depends. Cost varies with the size of the space, how it’s configured, the materials, and the number of custom features. Smaller closets typically start around $5,000, although smaller reach in closets may cost less and large boutique-type closets cost more. A helpful rule: “more product = more cost.” Learn more here.
Installation time varies by size and complexity. For example, a simple reach in might be installed in half a day to a full day, a standard walk in might take one to two days, and a large boutique closet could take three to four days. The installation method (wall hung vs. floor mounted), obstructions, and design features also impact scheduling. Learn more here.
We’re here to make installation as smooth and stress-free as possible. Ask us about temporary garment racks to keep your clothing accessible during the process, and how we can assist with removing your existing closet system and preparing your walls. We’ll talk through your needs and create a plan that works best for you and your home.

Design & Functionality
Absolutely. Even small reach in closets can be drastically improved when every inch is deliberately designed—shelving, hanging zones, and vertical space—so that the space feels larger and works harder. The key is designing based on what you own, how you use it, and what your habits are. Learn more here on how to maximize your space.
Yes. A good custom closet will be designed for flexibility so you can adjust it as your wardrobe or lifestyle evolves. Learn more about adjusting your custom closet here.
Depending on your needs, you might consider adjustable shoe shelving, jewelry trays, tie/belt racks, pull-out hampers, lighting enhancements, built-in drawers, a Shoe Shrine® section for tall boots or many pairs, and more. The key is to let the design reflect what you own and how you function, not just what “looks nice.” Discover what makes sense for you here.
Closet Types & Specialty Solutions
Wall-mounted systems attach to the wall, leaving floor space clear; floor-mounted systems sit on the floor and may require base molding or special installation.

Absolutely. If you’re a parent, you know that kids’ spaces can quickly devolve into chaos for an endless number of reasons. Learn how the designers at Inspired Closets will tailor features (lower hanging rods, open shelving, accessible drawers, etc.) to suit younger users’ needs.

Yes. Custom closets from Inspired Closets are designed around exactly what you own.
For example, our Shoe Shrine™ offers adjustable storage and a display for your collection, while velvet-lined jewelry drawers, slide-out hook walls for necklaces and bracelets, and space-saving options for purses and bags come together to create a system with specialized zones for any accessory you own.
Yes. Because a custom closet is designed based on what you own and how you use it, it can incorporate seasonal storage features. For example, flexible hanging zones and adjustable shelving allow you to rearrange based on summer vs. winter wardrobes. (Also read the “What is a custom closet?” article noting that every inch is designed to match your stuff and habits.)
So, whether you’re storing boots one season and sandals the next, your system can adapt. See how here.
Value & Trends
A custom closet is more than just storage, it’s a built-in element that enhances your daily routine and also creates lasting appeal for both your family now and for buyers in the future.
For example, custom storage helps keep a home clean and tidy, while built-ins and cabinets add lasting character to any space. This makes custom closets and smart storage options appealing to buyers and ultimately increases home value.
The right design will deliver both functional and resale benefits. Learn more here.
Homeowners are gravitating toward features like adjustable shelving, lighted shelves, natural and muted tones (rather than all white), and multi use spaces (for example, a closet that doubles as a reading nook or home office hybrid).
These trends reflect a shift toward closet spaces that not only store items but also support lifestyle and wellness. Read our 2026 closet design trend article to learn more.
